‘Bomb House’ Burn Will Close I-15 Thursday

Posted on December 7, 2010

California Highway Patrol currently plans to close Interstate 15 for two hours on Thursday during burning of the “bomb factory” house in Escondido.

Currently the San Diego Co. Sheriff’s Department’s Bomb/Arson Unit are making final preparations for the burn day, which could change depending upon weather conditions.   San Marcos and Escondido firefighters and the County HAZMAT team are also involved.

While the burn will take place several miles from 92127 – and no smoke is anticipated in the area – local drivers could be inconvenienced by the closing of the highway, tentatively scheduled for 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.  The times are tentative because CHP plans to continue the closure until air monitors indicate the air is free from toxins.

CHP, in conjunction with Cal-Trans, will close southbound traffic at Center City Parkway (just north of El Norte) and northbound traffic at state Route 78.  A detour will be placed directing traffic to exit both north and southbound to Center City Parkway.  Center City Parkway runs parallel to I-15 and will be utilized as the detour route.  CHP and Escondido Police Department will be providing traffic control in the area throughout the closure.

The California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) will provide funding for all the debris removal from the site except for the concrete slab. Escondido Police are finalizing evacuation and shelter in place zones and handling initial distribution of door-to-door educational flyers (indicating whether homeowners are within the evacuation or shelter in place zones).
