Floaties Offers Water Safety Clinic
Posted on May 23, 2011
In conjunction with National Drowning Prevention Awareness Month, Floaties Swim School hosts its 3rd Annual Water Safety Clinic at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 21.
At the clinic, children are taught self-rescue skills, educated on dangers in and around a swimming pool, and participate in activities that teach aquatic safety. Local law enforcement and pool safety companies attend the event to provide support and resources for parents, and pool safety materials will be provide to all parents and children who participate in the clinic.
All participants in the clinic receive a certificate of completion.
“Drowning is a leading cause of death for San Diego County children between the ages of one to four years old, with about 70 percent of these drownings occurring in residential swimming pools and spas. We at Safe Kids San Diego, and all of our supporting partners, are pleased that the County and different municipalities, along with the State of California, declared May as Drowning Prevention Month. This allows us the opportunity to reach out to the community and educate them on how to keep their children safe around water”, says Yossina Lissebeck, Chair of the Drowning Prevention Task Force for Safe Kids San Diego.
In an effort to promote water safety, Floaties Swim School teaches hundreds of children each year at its Poway location. Floaties Swim School teaches swim lessons year round, including infant aquatic classes, stroke clinics, adult swim classes, and is a popular choice for birthday parties. Classes are held in an indoor pool, heated to 90 degrees. Floaties also offers a USSA -certified youth swim team and has three satellite locations at Ramona High School, Stoneridge Country Club and Escondido High School.
“Summer is right around the corner, please stay safe in and around pools ,” said Mike Morrill, Floaties owner, “We encourage everyone to have fun in the water this summer, but we stress constant adult supervision. It is so important to know CPR, where the pools emergency shut off switches are, and children should learn to swim.”
